WADSWORTH
Fires at two houses
WADSWORTH: Firefighters are investigating two house fires that occurred within two hours of each other.
Firefighters were called to the 500 block of College Street shortly before 6:30 p.m. Friday and found flames rising from the basement of the home. Damage was estimated at $30,000.
While leaving the College Street site, firefighters were sent to a house fire in the 8000 block of Hartman Road in Wadsworth Township. That fire, which caused about $25,000 damage, started in the basement near a wood burner.
Rittman, Seville and the Guilford and Sharon Township fire departments assisted in the calls.
AKRON
Math team wins
AKRON: A team from Copley-Fairlawn Middle School won the 29th annual Akron area MATHCOUNTS competition Saturday at the University of Akron.
The goal of the program is to get middle school students excited about math.
The local competition, sponsored by the Akron District Society of Professional Engineers, included teams and individuals from 13 area middle schools in Summit, Portage and Medina counties. The competition consisted of written and oral math tests.
The two top teams — Copley-Fairlawn (Kevin Du, William Gao, Chan Park and Michael Weigand) and Revere Middle School (Stephen Kronenberger, Broderick Lewis, Kevin Luo and Leah Weisburn) — advanced to the state competition March 10 in Columbus.
Four top individuals also are advancing: Russel Ahsan and Matthew Fiedler of Revere Middle; Owen Miklos of Old Trail School; and Phuoc-Hanh Le of Harmon Middle School in Aurora.

Regional bike plan
AKRON: The Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study will present its draft Regional Bike Plan during two meetings this month.
The plan identifies regional bikeway needs and presents recommendations to improve the area’s bicycle trail network.
The meetings are at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 13 at the Kent Free Library, 312 W. Main St.; and 7 p.m. Feb. 14 at the Hudson Library and Historical Society, 96 Library St.
